Open vs closed rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty, also known as a “nose job” or “nose surgery”, is a procedure that can improve your nose by changing its shape and/or size.
It may be performed either for cosmetic or reconstructive reasons, such as birth anomalies or breathing problems.
Minor changes on the nose may have a significant impact on your overall appearance.
Thus, your surgeon will closely cooperate with you to evaluate the structure of your nose and face, and he will elaborate all those reasons that may affect the procedure or the surgical outcome
There are two basic approaches in rhinopasty- the closed and the open one. The closed technique entails incisions performed on the inside of the nose, as well as a minor incision between the nostrils. This external incision is easily healed and disappears once and for all.
The open approach allows for better predictability, flexibility and surgical precision, and is recommended when major changes have to be made on the nose during rhinoplasty.
There are many competent plastic surgeons that can perform either open or closed rhinoplasty, or a combination, if deemed necessary.
The most important thing is that your surgeon fully informs you on what has
to be corrected, along with the available options for its achievement, to
help you decide on the procedure.
You should carefully consider two factors:
- The experience and the competence of the surgeon who is going to conduct the procedure.
- The evaluation on what has to be corrected and the method applied..
